DELAPLANCHE,
"L'Éducation Maternelle"
Patinated bronze. Inscribed “Delaplanche 1873,” foundry marks “F. Barbedienne Fondeur Paris” and “Réduction Mécanique A. Collas Brevete,” with the mark “813.” H 30.5 cm. 10.80 kg.
Mother seated on a chair, next to her a young girl reading aloud from a book with the help of a reading rod held by her mother. Patina minimally worn.
If this is indeed Eugène Delaplanche, then: French sculptor (1836 Belleville (now Paris) – 1891 Paris), a student of the sculptor Francisque Joseph Duret. A monumental marble sculpture depicting this motif has stood on Place Samuel-Rousseau in Paris since 1875.
