Bronze, black patina. Signed "Peter Breuer," foundry mark "Aktien-Gesellschaft-Gladenbeck Berlin Friedrichshagen"; casting cannot be dated. 47 x 50 x 34 cm. 24 kg.
Seated young man holding a woman close to him. Signs of age and wear, a few scratches, patina partially worn away.
Peter Christian Breuer: German sculptor and medalist; studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Joseph Knabl beginning in 1874; studied in Berlin under Heinrich Hoffmeister, and from 1878 studied in Berlin under Fritz Schaper at the Academy of Fine Arts; taught from 1892 to 1921, serving as professor of sculpture at the Academic University of Fine Arts starting in 1896, and at the Academy of Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg (formerly the Academic University of Fine Arts) starting in 1902; his students included, among others, Hans Dammann, Fritz Röll, Leopold Fleischhacker, Felix Pfeifer, Johann Robert Korn, Eugen Senge-Platten, and Rudolf Belling.
