Warrior with a bow
Patinated bronze. Marked “Bousseau.” H 47.5 cm. 14.7 kg.
Male warrior seated, surrounded by his equipment and drawing a bow. The depiction likely refers to Homer’s *Odyssey* and shows Odysseus’s return to Ithaca, as he draws his bow to pass the archery test demanded by Penelope. Based on the marble sculpture “Soldat bandant un arc” by Bousseau from 1715, which is now in the Musée du Louvre. Signs of age and wear, minor scratches and dents, slight patina formation (verdigris).
Jacques Bousseau: French sculptor, also known in Spain as Jacobo Busó or Jacobo Buso; served as Chief Court Sculptor to King Philip V of Spain, a student of Nicolas Coustou at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in Paris; in 1715, he was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture with the marble statuette “Soldat bandant un arc.”
