Large Art Nouveau bronze bust of a woman—“Le Génie de la Danse”
Patinated bronze, green marble base. Signed "JB. Carpeaux," no foundry mark; casting cannot be dated. H 69 cm. 44 kg.
Bust of a laughing woman with flowing hair. The bust “Le Génie de la Danse” is part of Carpeaux’s sculptural group “La Danse” from 1868, which was created for the façade of the Opéra Garnier in Paris and has been housed at the Musée d’Orsay since 1986. Signs of age and wear; patina partially worn away; scratches.
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux: French sculptor, painter, and engraver; in 1846, he entered the Académie des Beaux-Arts and became a student of Francisque Joseph Duret; in 1854, he was awarded the Prix de Rome on the occasion of an exhibition by the Académie Française.
