Lyre Player
Patinated bronze. Signed "L. Grégoire," foundry mark "Boyer Fres A Paris." 57.5 x 26.5 x 22 cm. 19.65 kg.
A woman in antique-style robes, leaning casually against a column stump. Her right arm rests on a lyre, while she holds a laurel branch in her left hand. Possibly a depiction of the ancient Greek poet Sappho. Signs of age and wear; the lower end of the laurel branch is broken; patina is worn.
If this is by Jean-Louis Grégoire, then: French sculptor (1840 Paris – 1890 ibid.), trained by Jean Jules Salmson at the École des Beaux-Arts.
Provenance: Peter Kaus Museum estate.
