Shepherd with Herding Dog
Patinated bronze. Signed “G. Déloye.” H 61 cm. 18.7 kg.
A shepherd is depicted running across a rocky outcrop with his herding dog; equipped with a bell and a whip, they are on their way to tend cattle. The plaque attached to the shepherd’s feet indicates that the sculpture was used as a prize in an agricultural competition in Nantes in 1901. Signs of age and wear, patina formation (verdigris).
Gustave Deloye: French sculptor and medalist (born Jean-Baptiste Gustave Deloye), studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris beginning in 1857 under François Jouffroy, Jean-Pierre Dantan, and Philippe Joseph Henri Lemaire.
