"Bees of Malia" Dangle Earrings.
Each piece is stamped 585 yellow gold. 20.75 x 25.10 mm (measured including the pendants, excluding the earring posts or hooks). Total weight: 4.0 g.
Each dangle earring features a depiction of the so-called Bees of Malia, based on an archaeological find in the Chrysolakkos Necropolis (Crete) 1930, now on display at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion (inventory number AMI 559). The Minoan original, also made of gold, dates from between 1800 and 1700 B.C. and is significantly larger than the pendants of this pair of earrings. The depiction shows two flying insects sucking on a drop of honey. There are various interpretations of the symbolism presumed to be conveyed by the depiction. Clasp: Simple hook on the back.
