PAJOU,
Tambourine player with a faun and a putto
Terracotta, dark grayish-brown. Inscribed "Pajou f. 1774." H 55.5 cm. 10.75 kg.
On a round pedestal featuring rocks entwined with vines stands a scantily clad nymph holding a tambourine. Her gaze is directed downward toward a small faun boy reaching out toward her, while her right hand is placed protectively around a putto, who is sitting next to her on the rock and holding fruit. Signs of age and wear; minor chipping on the base; the coating is partially worn; two fingers on the faun’s right hand are missing (though the gray coating is undamaged).
If this is indeed Augustin Pajou, then: French sculptor (1730, Paris – 1809, ibid.), attended the Académie Royale from the age of 14, where he was a student of the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne; spent several years studying in Rome and Italy; enjoyed the favor of the king and Madame du Barry.
