"Ariadne and the Panther"
Terracotta, reddish-brown. Signed "A. Carrier Belleuse." 56 x 50 x 25 cm. 14.65 kg.
On an oval pedestal, a young woman is trying with all her might to tame the struggling panther with the garland around its neck. Signs of age and wear, a few small cracks, the panther’s tail is torn and glued, a hole in the pedestal (possibly an intentional design feature).
If this is by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, then: French sculptor and draftsman (1824, Anizy-le-Château – 1887, Sèvres), studied under Pierre Jean David d’Angers at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris beginning in 1840, from the 1850s onward, he created marble works, bronze sculptures, and terracotta busts; he was called the “Clodion of the Second Empire” (Claude Michel Clodion, 1738–1814), In 1864, he befriended the young sculptor Auguste Rodin; from 1875 to 1887, he served as artistic director and head of the studio at the Manufacture royale de porcelaine de Sèvres in Sèvres.
