Considered one of the most important painters in Germany: "I have always refused to look into nature. I think that the biggest mistake and the biggest constriction in painting since the late Baroque is that painting has something to do with nature. It wasn't that way in the Gothic period, it wasn't that way in icon painting. Then in the early Renaissance, it started to become Hollywood-like. Pictures became more and more embellished, more and more realistic. That became very extreme in the 19th century and at the turn of the century with so-called naturalism. I noticed that this was the decline of painting." (Quote: Georg Baselitz, seen on: https://ropac.net/news/470-georg-baselitz-ich-wollte-raus-aus-dem-grau/).
