Exceptionally large medallion carpet HERIZ.
Late 19th c. Northwest Persia, Azerbaijan. Plaque "Museum Schloß Burgk 1676", old lead marks.
Wool, hand-knotted. Polychrome decoration with predominantly red and blue tones, abrash. Approx. 335 x 595 cm.
Shield-shaped red mirror with a large midnight blue central medallion and an inner star rosette, pendant large light blue palmettes, filled with geometric floral decoration. Corners with white ground quarter medallions. Three-row samovar border with light blue fond. Signs of age and wear, faded colouring, defects to the pile, selvedges and fringed finishes, in need of cleaning.
Antique, large-format oriental carpets from the Heriz region are particularly characterized by simple, symmetrical compositions and a motif profusion of geometricized floral ornaments. The few colours used are broken down into different shades and at the same time accentuated and harmoniously combined. Since the end of the 19th century, Heriz carpets were particularly popular in Europe and America, resulting in increased production in the villages and small towns of the region.
