Side-inverted depiction of the public pleasure garden "Ranelagh Gardens" in London with staffage figures, inscribed in English and French "A View of the Canal Chinese Building, Rotunda in Ranelagh, Gardens with Masquarade & c", "Vue du Canal du Batiment Chinois de la Rotunda [...]". Stick-spotted.
In order to create optical illusions, the peep-box was a popular fairground attraction from the 2nd half of the 18th century onwards, presenting graphics to the viewer with deceptively real perspective and shaping the image of the "wide world" with views of landmarks, exotic scenes or theatrical representations.
