PROBST, Georg Balthasar
Picture of the Moritzbastei Leipzig
Colored engraving. Signed in the plate. Probably end of 18th century
Passepartout cut-out: 32 x 43 cm. Framed & behind glass : 49 x 58.5 cm.
Side-inverted view of the Moritz Bastion in Leipzig and staffage figures, inscribed "Vue du Bastion Maurice à Leipzig", in French and German "Vue du Bastion Maurice, à leipzig", "Prospect der Moritz Bastey zu Leipzig", after a drawing by Balthasar Friedrich Leizelt. Heavily foxed, traces of handling.
For the creation of optical illusions the peep-box was a popular fairground attraction from the 2nd half of the 18th century, which presented graphics with deceptively real perspective to the viewer and shaped the image of the "wide world" with views of sights, exotic scenes or theatrical representations.
