Late Gothic figure of St. Stephen
Lime wood. Franconia 15th/16th c. Height: 74 cm.
Fully sculptured slender standing figure in detailed robe with rich drapery, adorned at the edges by a fringed hem. In his left hand he holds an open gospel book. In his right hand he holds three stones as a sign of martyrdom. The forearms are bent almost horizontally. Finely worked semi-long curly hair emphasizes the prominent head with sunken cheeks and chin dimples. The look of the almond-shaped eyes, which are highlighted by eyeliner, seems visionary otherworldly values turned towards. hands and attributes supplemented, back smaller y-shaped cracking.
Saint Stephen, deacon of the Jerusalem early church. First martyr of Christianity, was stoned to death about the year 40. Patron saint of various cities and bishoprics. Commemoration day: 26 December * Partner auction miner.
