Kaempfer: 1651 Lemgo - 1716 Lieme, German physician and explorer. In the course of an exploratory voyage (1683 to 1693) that took him via Russia and Persia to India, Java, Siam and finally Japan, he gathered a great deal of knowledge about the geography, nature, society, religion, politics, administration, and the sciences and arts of the regions he traveled. His writings are considered important contributions to the early modern exploration of the countries of Asia. At the same time, they shaped the European image of Japan in the 18th century and served as a reference work for many explorers until the early 19th century.
