Fritz Winter was a German painter and one of the most important representatives of abstract painting of the postwar period. He studied with Albers and Kandinsky at the Dessau Bauhaus and in 1928 worked in Paul Klee's painting class and Oskar Schlemmer's stage department. He regularly visited Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in Davos, with whom he had a close friendship. Already in the 1920s he participated in several exhibitions and even had solo exhibitions. At the time of National Socialism, his art was considered "degenerate", was confiscated and Winter was banned from painting and exhibiting. After the war he was a co-founder of the group "Zen 49". He received a professorship at the Academy in Kassel and participated in documenta I, II and III. Finally, he received a retrospective in 1965/66, which was shown in several German cities.
