Elaborately embroidered blanket of Duke Carl Theodor in Bavaria.
Around 1880.
Smooth linen, blue and white artificial embroidery (backstitch, piquet stitch, nodule filling, damask stitch, high embroidery, etc.), knot work. 185 x 175 cm (without fringes).
Wide embroidered frieze in Renaissance style with floral border and birds. Shaded motto in ribbons: "Fair women in the circle of guests - Bring to the good the very best - Nothing nobler is found on earth - Than faithful of heart and true of wounds". At the edge hemstitching, knotwork and long fringes. Small repair spots at the fringe.
Duke Carl Theodor in Bavaria (1839 - 1909 ) was a famous German ophthalmologist and the father-in-law of the Belgian King Albert I and the Bavarian Crown Prince Rupprecht. Probably made for the country castle of Possenhofen or for Kreuth Castle.
