Baroque miniature: Duke Ernst August I of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.

Oil / copper, glazed ppt. in gold strip. 11.5 x 5.5 cm, frame 21 x 17 cm.
High rectangular miniature divided centrally: Above bust portrait of the Duke in armor with sable coat; below ducal hat, Saxon coat of arms and monogram "EADS", cartouche with date of birth "Natuo d. 19 April 1688" above trophies. Minimal signs of age / use.
Duke Ernst August I took over the de facto government of Saxony-Weimar in 1728. He was the builder of Belvedere Palace, among others. During his reign, Johann Sebastian Bach served as organist in the city church ("Herderkirche") of Weimar.
