Bernhard Heisig is considered one of the most important representatives of art in the GDR. He was intermittently professor and rector of the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig and taught the painter Neo Rauch (*1960), who today is considered the most important representative of the New Leipzig School. In 1986 Helmut Schmidt had his portrait painted by Bernhard Heisig for the Gallery of Former Federal Chancellors in the Federal Chancellery in Bonn. Heinrich Tessmer studied at the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art and took over as head of the painting department there in 1984.
