Look box sheet "Vue du Palais Colonne di Sciarra a Rome"
Colored copperplate engraving.
Image: 32 x 41 cm. Framed & behind glass : 48 x 57 cm.
Side-inverted depiction of the Palazzo Sciarra in Rome with staffage figures and legend, inscribed "Vue du Palais Colonne di Sciarra a Rome". Heavily soiled and creased.
To create optical illusions, the peep-show box was a popular fairground attraction from the 2nd half of the 18th century, which presented the viewer graphics with deceptively real perspective and shaped the image of the "wide world" with views of landmarks, exotic scenes or theatrical representations.
