Late Biedermeier stove screen with bead embroidery.
Solid walnut and stained, glass, fabric. Approx. 106 x 57 x 43 cm.
Small curved fireplace screen on bridge feet, crowned with rocaille carving; glazed, large frame covering with depiction of an oriental woman on a camel as a beaded embroidered picture, red velvet cover with decorative lined decorative nailing on the back. Frame with breakage, inactive anobia attack.
Fireplace screens were especially popular in the 18th century, because the wax-based makeup that women and men wore had to be protected from heat. So someone standing or sitting in front of an open fire could be relatively sure that their makeup would stay in place because of the height-adjustable screen.
