Decorative fireplace screen with hunting painting.
19th century
Wood, brass. H max 131 cm, Ø ca. 41 cm.
Richly decorated stove shade on column shaft with brass strut and height-adjustable, curved framed, round shade; painted in Asian style with gold elevation, shade with finely painted hunting scene. Traces of age/use, painting rubbed, crackled and with glue spots.
Fireplace screens were especially popular in the 18th century, because the wax-based makeup that women and men wore, had to be protected from heat. So someone standing or sitting in front of an open fire could be relatively sure that their makeup would stay in place because of the height-adjustable screen.
