Baroque veilleuse with hunting motifs.
Unmarket, 2nd half 18th century
Polychrome painted, gold decorated. H 23 cm.
Sculpted in the form of a tureen teapot/rechaud with two rocaille handles, four covered air noses and lid. On both sides the depiction of hunting dogs hunting birds. Without insert bowl. Lid restored and with edge chips, both handles and 1 air nose restored.
A veilleuse consisted of a base (réchaud), a shallow oil bowl/lamp/burner, an insert bowl with handles and a lid. It was used both as a night light and to keep food and drink warm, which bedridden and sick people could drink or spoon from the inserted bowl.
