Josef Hoffmann (1870 Piernitz - 1956 Vienna), interior designer and furniture designer, co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte. Bentwood is bent under steam by a process developed by Michael Thonet around 1830. After the privilege granted in 1856 to "manufacture furniture from solid bent wood" was canceled in 1869, numerous furniture factories sprang up - including J. & J. Kohn, which further developed the process so that edged wood rods could be processed as well.
