Rare plate with mythical animals. Meissen.
Sword mark, 2nd H. 20th century, 1st choice.
Polychrome painted, gold decorated. Ø 22 cm.
Form "New Cutout". In the mirror the depiction of two exotic animals in a landscape with Indian floral painting, after a decor by Adam Friedrich von Löwenfinck (1714-1754).
Löwenfinck painting belongs to the highest classes of Meissen painting. Among other things, it attracts attention because of the depiction of exotic, fabulous and strange shaggy creatures in exotic fantasy landscapes. In fact, it is not a fantasy animal that can be seen on this plate, but an animal that plays an important role in Far Eastern mythology. The so-called "Kilin" (Chinese) or "Kirin" (Japanese) has the body of a deer, the tail of a cow, sometimes fish scales and split hooves with hair tassels. It is considered a symbol of infinite goodness and belongs to the four sacred animals. Its "inventor" on Meissen porcelain is the famous porcelain painter Adam Friedrich von Löwenfinck (1714-1754), who came from the Höroldt school (cf. Sonntag, Hans: Die Botschaft des Drachen, , pp. 72/73, Walcha, Otto, Meissen Porcelain, pp. 67f.).
