One of the most important German publishers and topographical engravers of the Baroque period. Together with his brother Matthäus Merian the Younger, he continued the publication of the main works of his father Matthäus Merian the Elder - the 16-volume "Topographia Germaniae" (1642 - 1659) and the 21-volume Theatrum Europaeum (1633 - 1738) - which are still among the most important works of geographical illustration today.
