Richly decorated Empire casket with secret compartments.
Early 19th century
Various veneers (walnut, burl wood, plum, maple etc.), brass fittings, marble paper inside. 19 x 43 x 29 cm.
Large box with marquetry coffers on all sides and on the hinged lid with fine thread inlays; meandering bands on the lid and central vase inlay with blackened hatching. Carrying handles on the sides, added keyhole fittings with laurel and arrows. The interior lined with paper. Interior compartment with 2 small boxes with fitted lids marked in the same style. Restored with minor repairs, slight dry cracks and signs of age/use.
