Max, genre, history and portrait painter, illustrator. Studied at the academies in Prague, Vienna and Munich. Pupil of Carl Theodor von Piloty. 1878-1883 professor at the academy in Munich, 1900 honorary doctorate, elevated to the nobility. From 1869 he acquired monkeys, which he painted frequently, but always related them to humans. He repeated some of his motifs several times.
