Artfully painted grandfather clock with chinoiserie "William Townsend London".
England. 18th century
Movement with hour strike on bell. Function not tested, overhaul recommended. Brass dial as a round arched shield with floral applications, marked "William Townsend London", Roman numerals, small second at 12, date display at 6, Louis XV iron hands.
Hardwood, painted in chinoiserie red lacquer, gold and black. Approx. 227 x 49 x 24 cm.
3-sided glazed workbox with arched gable, lateral columns and 2 attached pointed spigots, slender pendulum box and protruding plinth. Extremely fine Asianizing painting with idealized pagoda landscapes, figurative landscape scenarios, an interior scene, flowers and exotic birds. Signs of age and wear, dry cracks in places, without fittings, side glasses missing, minor rubbing of the paintings, partial retouching.
With pendulum, crank, 2 iron weights, case key.
