Sibyl, a priestess from Babylon who presided over the oracle of Cumae (ancient city near Naples) in the 6th century BC. The original painting is in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. Old adhesive labels on the reverse: Galleria P. Forza and Dott. Augusto Canal Treviso. Glazed blackened profile frame. Small losses of color in places, lower corner torn.
Angelika Kauffmann (1741 Chur - 1807 Rome) copied the Cumaean Sibyl after Demenichino in the early 1760s, various other copies can be found in international museums * Partner auction Bergmann.
