"The Lotto de Dauphin was invented in 1775 by the game maker Vaugeois as a more complicated variation of the existing Lotto. In Versailles in particular, the prince (Dauphin) was fond of playing it; it is said that Louis XVI himself suggested the game to entertain his son and that there was a game of Loto de Dauphin every evening in a different room of the palace. A game even accompanied the royal family when they were imprisoned in the Temple. It remained a popular game in French upper-class families until the 19th century". (quoted from: Antiquariat T. Mertens, Berlin, in ZVAB).
