Westerwald roller jug with large fan-shaped flower and knotted bands.

Grey, salt-glazed stoneware with incised and stamped decoration, cobalt blue painting and dotted decoration. H 26 cm.
Cylindrical shape with pointed ear handle. The front with a large flower in a spirally entwined reserve with flanking leaf volutes and feathered leaf branches. Pewter lid with ball pusher, engraved and dated "19 J.G.K. 1786", hallmarked inside. Mouth area cracked, pewter lid with defects.
The Westerwald stoneware offered in this auction was collected by Albrecht von der Gabelentz (1873-1933), chamberlain at the ducal court in Altenburg. He was appointed director of the Lindenau Museum in 1912. After the duke's abdication in 1918, Albrecht von der Gabelentz also took over the management of the palace museum on a voluntary basis. The collection was continued by his son Georg (1906-1954).
Provenance : From Thuringian aristocratic property. Restitution property with inventory number of the Altenburg Residential Palace, formerly part of the von der Gabelentz family collection at Poschwitz Castle.
