Portrait of the upper body of a man and a woman, apparently in conversation, one of Kirchner's total of 24 illustrative prints for Jakob Boßhart's story "Wie Josua Grübler seinen Weg fand", published in his collection of 6 novellas with the overall title "Neben der Heerstraße" from 1923.

Letter from Ernst Ludwig Kirchner to Nele van de Velde dated March 20, 1924: "I am sending you today 'en récompense' a book illustrated by me: 'Neben der Heerstraße' by Boßhart. [...] Boßhart, who has unfortunately just died, was my dear friend and friendly patron of my work.
