Fingesten, born Finkelstein, began his studies at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 16. During a study trip from 1902 to 1906, he increasingly focused on small-format prints, concentrating primarily on etchings from 1913 onwards. Due to his Jewish origins and his art, which was deemed "degenerate", Fingesten was arrested and charged in 1940.
