Hans am Ende was an Impressionist painter. He studied at the Royal Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the Grand Ducal Baden School of Art in Karlsruhe. Alongside Fritz Overbeck and Otto Modersohn, he was one of the founders of the Worpswede artists' colony in 1889. Am Ende volunteered for the First World War - during his deployment on the Western Front, he continued to produce ink sketches and paintings.
