Dining plate with serrated rim, the mirror depicting the mountain hellebore, the Latin name of the plant ("Athamanta libanotis") and the leaf and fascicle number ("Fl: Danic: Tab: DCCLIV. F. 13") on the underside. Painting probably by Johann Christoph Bayer (1738-1812). With the corresponding botanical engraving. In a transport case. Below 3 rim chips, some of the spikes partially restored, ground out and retouched in gold.
Flora Danica (Latin for Danish flora) is the botanical name of an old collection created from 1753 onwards. This plate is a very rare plate from the original Flora Danica dinner service from 1790 to 1792, from the order of the Danish Crown Prince and later King Frederick VI of Denmark. Of these plates from the original service, there are only three comparable plates in Danish private ownership, and probably only 11 pieces in private collections worldwide.
Provenance : Privately owned, probably once part of the royal collection. The plate was presented to the "Royal Danish Collection Rosenborg" and its provenance was confirmed. The engraving of the motif added to the plate as a copy comes from correspondence with the curator Jesper Munk Andersen. All lots with a limit (starting price) of at least €1,500 will be checked against the Art Loss Register database.
