Horn tabatiere with bataille motif.
1st half of the 19th century
Dark horn, pressed relief on the lid. 2 x 9 x 5.5 cm.
Flat rectangular box, on the hinged lid a battle scene with French inscription: "Mort de Poniatowski". Minor signs of age/use, mostly on the base.
Poniatowski was a general of the Duchy of Warsaw and Napoleon's marshal. After the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, he covered Napoleon's retreat as commander of the rearguard. When the bridge over the White Elster was blown up prematurely, he tried to cross the river on horseback despite being wounded and drowned.
