In 1846, the first railroad line was opened between Pest and Vác in Hungary. The then Hungarian Central Railway (UCB) was taken over by the k.k. south-eastern state railroads in 1850 and merged into the k.k. privileged Austro-Hungarian State Railway Company (StEG) in 1855. By 1894, the many Hungarian railroad companies were nationalized in the Hungarian State Railway (MÁV, Magyar Államvasutak), which was founded for this purpose.
