"The Lotto de Dauphin was invented in 1775 by the game maker Vaugeois as a more complicated variation of the existing Lotto. In Versailles in particular, the prince (Dauphin) was fond of playing it. It is said that Louis XVI himself suggested the game to entertain his son and that a game of Loto de Dauphin was played every evening in a different room of the palace. A game even accompanied the royal family when they were imprisoned in the Temple. It remained a popular game in French upper-class families until the 19th century". (quoted from: Antiquariat T. Mertens, Berlin, in ZVAB).
