Pair of so-called "Bachelor Buttons", historical type of cufflinks, each with a small micromosaic depicting a dove on a flowering branch.
Micromosaics in various designs, but above all as jewelry, were extremely popular with 19th century travelers to Italy and especially Rome. One of the most frequently replicated motifs were the so-called "Doves of Pliny", the original of which can be seen as a large antique mosaic in Rome. The present depiction of a dove is probably also loosely based on this famous motif. The very likely original case bears the gold-stamped address of the mosaicist Cesare Roccheggiani (also supplier to the Italian royal court) at Via dei Condotti 13.
