Painted baroque fan in frame.
1750s or 1760s.
Painting on paper, reverse probably leather, sequins, glass paste, bone (?). The fan 48.0 x 23.5 cm, the frame 67 x 52.5 cm. 3.8 kg.
Folding fan with elaborately open-worked rods with partial gold and silver staffage, the spike decorated with glass paste. The central cartouche of the fan shows a pair of lovers in a pastoral-idealized landscape in front of an antique-style monument in shepherdess fashion: both are holding a bouquet of flowers together, he is leaning on a shepherd's crook decorated with ribbons, while she is wearing a small so-called bergère (English: "shepherdess", hat type with a protruding brim and flat crown) on her head. the two cartouches bordering the main motif show 2 representations of Mars, the god of war, and Venus, the goddess of love, as an allegory of love. In a display frame. Traces of age. The silver and gold staffage with traces of oxidation and losses, the paper partially wavy, some minor losses of color and tears, especially at the fold lines. Mounting in box loose on one side.
Due to the framing and mounting of the fan in the box, the reverse can only be partially examined. The back of the fan leaf appears to be covered with leather, which is decorated with silver-grey vine painting along the edges of the fan leaf. Enclosed is an older sales invoice. Certificate & EU trade license available.
