Small Art Deco bronze dancer "Captive Bird"
Bronze, green onyx marble. Unmarked. Inscribed "Lorenzl" on the base. Model no. 5331 307, designed by Josef Lorenzl for the Viennese manufactory Friedrich Goldscheider. H 11.5 cm / 9.5 cm. 0.35 kg.
Figure of a woman depicted in step with a butterfly-winged robe over her arms stretched out backwards and forwards, on an oval stone plinth. The model was the dancer and actress Niddy Impekoven in a butterfly costume, based on the design by Josef Lorenzl from 1922 for Goldscheider. Often also titled "Butterfly Dancer".
Josef Lorenzl: Austrian sculptor and ceramicist of the Art Deco period (1892 Vienna - 1950 ibid.), he achieved fame with his chryselephantine sculptures, he also designed ceramics for Friedrich Goldscheider, one of his best-known works is the sculpture "Captive Bird" of the dancer Niddy Impekoven from the 1920s.
