German painter, graphic artist and designer, studied at the Dresden Academy and later at the Karlsruhe Academy under F. Keller. Also studied at the Académie Julian Paris. Worked as a freelance artist in Berlin from 1890. Professor at the art school in Weimar from 1903. One of the pioneers of the "New Weimar" movement. Professor at the Dresden Academy since 1916. Some of his works were classified as "degenerate" in 1937.
