Monumental sculpture: Ariadne on the panther
Alabaster, travertine. Probably 19th century, without signature. 79 x 65 x 29 cm.
Young lady reclining on a striding panther in nude, with a wreath of leaves in her hair. Modeled on the famous marble sculpture from 1812-14 by the German sculptor Johann Heinrich Dannecker, which has been reproduced many times. The restored original is on display in the Liebighaus in Frankfurt am Main. Dannecker created the sculpture based on a story from Greek mythology, according to which the daughter of the Cretan king Minos helps the king's son Theseus to escape from the Minotaur's labyrinth and is left behind by him on the island of Naxos during his flight. Adorned with vine leaves, she is carried there by a panther towards the wine king Bacchus, who has fallen in love with her. Hairline fracture in Ariadne's knee. Panther: travertine lighter on the back in the area of the connection between the figure and the animal (surface less polished), travertine with cracks (legs, tail), crack line/adhesive spot? on the head, with small putty behind the right ear.
Johann Heinrich Dannecker: Württemberg sculptor of classicism, artistic training with Johann Valentin Sonnenschein (1749-1828), Pierre François Lejeune (1721-1790), Adolf Friedrich Harper (1725-1806) and Nicolas Guibal (1725-1784), stays in Paris and Rome.
