White marble, green onyx plinth in brass frame, plinth filled with plaster. After 1903, inscribed "Emil Cauer". H 62 cm / 55.5 cm. 47.30 kg.
Kneeling nude of a young woman bending down to the water. This version shows the water scoop without a shell. The sculpture is one of the sculptor's best-known works. Cauer showed a first version as early as 1900 under the title "Water-scooping Girl" at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. a marble version was created in 1903, which was also shown at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1904 and was later acquired by Kaiser Wilhelm II. He also created several replicas in marble and alabaster, some of which he executed himself. Cracked green onyx plate, small chip on the nose, slight signs of age and wear.
Emil Cauer the Younger: sculptor in Berlin and Rome, came from a sculptor dynasty, studied with his father Karl Cauer and in 1886/87 in the studio of his uncle Robert Cauer in Rome, in 1888 he went to Berlin and studied under Otto Lessing at the renowned teaching institute of the Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts, in 1898 Cauer founded his own studio in Berlin. The marble figure "Wasserschöpferin" from 1900 is in the Nationalgalerie Berlin. All lots with a limit (starting price) of at least €2,000 will be checked against the Art Loss Register database.
