MASULLI,
"Venus of Capua"
Yellow cast, bronze patina. inscribed "Masulli 1876". H 63 cm. 9.10 kg.
The crowned woman stands in contrapost, her left foot rests on a helmet, only clothed by a drape across her legs. The model was the depiction of Aphrodite of Capua, a sculpture from the time of Hadrian, which can now be found in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Naples. Significant signs of age and wear, rubbed patina, partially cracked and pitted, defects, individual chips, partial patina formation (verdigris).
If it should be Pietro Masulli, then: Italian sculptor (1824 Naples - 1876 ibid.).
