Large portrait bust of Madame Récamier
White marble. Without signature. H 64 cm. 43.90 kg.
Bust of a young woman with a devoutly lowered gaze. Her hair is pinned up with a ribbon and comb, while she holds a scarf in front of her chest. Chinard created the depiction of Juliette Récamier around 1805/06 and it has been in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon since 1909. In the following years, several versions of this portrait bust were created in different materials. Slight signs of age with chips (including on the cloth, hair comb, verso corner of the plinth).
Joseph Chinard: French sculptor, pupil of the court painter Nonnotte and then worked in the studio of the sculptor Barth. Blaise, stays in Rome, member of the Lyon Academy, became official artist of the city of Lyon.
