Marble sculpture "Circassian Slave" with veiled face
White marble. Without signature. H 51.5 cm. 54.40 kg.
The veiled, partially unclothed woman sits on an oval plinth in the shape of a stone. She is probably a slave, as her wrists are tied to the stone. A smaller version of this sculpture (h 34.2 cm) can be found in the Wallace Collection in London under the inventory number S43. Minor chips, four fingertips of the left hand missing, one toe of the left foot chipped, larger piece of the plinth replaced.
Raffaele Monti: Italian sculptor, studied at the Imperial Academy under his father Gaetano Matteo Monti, traveled to Vienna and England, one of his specialties are figures with illusionistic veils.
Provenance : Museum estate Peter Kaus; probably bought at auction for £5,500 at Sotheby's on 23.11.2010.
