The face cards depict rulers, queens, and military figures of the time, such as Emperor Franz Joseph I, Tsar Nicholas, Abdülmecid I, Radetzky, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, Queen Isabella of Spain, and others. The Crimean War (1853–1856) is regarded, according to modern understanding, as the first industrialized war of position. Under the pretext of religious tensions in the region, the European great powers involved fought over territorial and economic interests, which ultimately shook the political system of Europe established at the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
