High-quality mantel clock by the French clockmaker François Viger (master since 1744) in a gilt-bronze sculpture depicting an allegorical scene featuring a putto and a small bird, with a book lying at its feet. The enamel dial features a minute track, Roman numerals, and gilded hands, and is additionally marked Viger Paris.. Found to be in working order during a brief test. The enamel dial is slightly yellowed with partial losses and restorations; the bell may have been replaced. Signs of wear on the winding mechanisms consistent with the watch’s age; the gold plating shows minimal signs of aging.
Enclosed is an auction catalog from 1974 detailing the sale of a very similar clock by the same manufacturer. François Viger preferred to collaborate with particularly skilled artists who designed his watch cases, such as Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain, Antoine Foullet, and Jean-Baptiste Osmond. Shipping upon request.
